Pompano Beach, Florida April 15, 2007: Given the adverse odds for success, should a first time writer who is self published be compelled to claim a voice at America’s largest book trade fair? With mounting costs and entrenched competition, should I not slam shut the checkbook and turn tail for the door? But, would a loving father deny his children the prospect for success? Or can an artist be defined without a review of his art? I will claim a voice at the NYC Book-Expo because it is my due. A paragraph I wrote on my first laptop challenged me to expand into a book. With tenuous fingers, I began to peck words on the keyboard: nouns became animated by verbs and then spiced with adjectives. Soon enough, the paragraphs became chapters and a storyline matured. It thrilled me to read the lives of imagined characters, whose passions were revealed through the fluorescent glow of the computer screen. It was no wonder their stories evolved into my first borne, Cry WaterColors. The emotion with which I write requires that my voice be sounded at the decibel to which the book industry will hear. I invite those interested in reading a poetic love story, spiced with the Hispanic melodrama of my upbringing, to come visit me (Carlos Alvarado) at BOOTH 1846 and buy an autographed copy of Cry WaterColors.
